Who is George Takei’s sister?

Though her age is unknown, Nancy Reiko Takei is the youngest child of  Takekuma Norman Takei and Fumiko Emily Takei. She follows her elder brother Henry Takei closely and George Takei is the eldest of the Takei children. Before George, their parents had a boy some a year after they got married in 1935, unfortunately, they lost him a few months after his birth. It was a devastating loss that Fumiko never forgot throughout her life.

Nancy Reiko Takei was named by her mother Fumiko after a friend she admired. Her two brothers George and Henry were named by their father Takekuma. The Huffington Post revealed that George Takei was named after King George VI of England, whose coronation came just a few weeks after Takei’s birth. Her brother, Henry, is also named after a British royal: King Henry III because he was a big, chubby infant as fat as the rotund King Henry.

In the 2014 documentary To Be Takei, Takei reveals that it was because his father was a major Anglophile. He also said once on his blog, “Those who know me know that I am an inconvertible Anglophile – or more broadly, a Britanophile, which includes my affection for Scotland and Wales as well.”

Their father had a successful dry cleaning business in the Wilshire district near the fashionable Bullock’s Wilshire department store. However, things took a different turn for the Takei family after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 which directed all Japanese Americans to be evacuated from the west coast. The Takei family was ordered out of their home on Garnet Street by armed soldiers and forced to stay in the horse stables of nearby Santa Anita Race Track.

George’s little sister, Nancy Reiko Takei is only months old when soldiers escort the Takei family from their home and place them in internment camps. She grows from an infant in their mother’s arms to a plucky toddler during the family’s years in the camps and struggles occasionally with illness.

Nancy Reiko is one of the memoir’s most heartbreaking examples of how internment affected children during those trying times. Given her age, Nancy Reiko Takei literally knows nothing else; the camps are normal to her. So when their father leads the family to their first temporary residence after leaving Camp Tule Lake, Nancy Reiko begs to go back home to the camp, as George revealed in his Book– They Called Us Enemy.

Like George, Nancy Reiko struggles to adjust when the family leaves the camp for the Alta Hotel in Los Angeles. Their parents diligently accumulated small savings by putting in long, exhausting hours of work. They were getting older and their parents were worried about their future.

They desired for their kids to live in a better area and have better educations. They were adamant that receiving a quality education was crucial for them. They were able to purchase a three-bedroom home in their old mid-Wilshire area four years after leaving the camps. Takekuma later started a successful Real Estate business.
